the valley town
Dundas sits in a valley at the foot of the escarpment, so almost every road out of town climbs. That makes it one of the best places around for hill practice.

why it’s good practice
Steep roads, small streets
Downtown Dundas has a compact main street with parked cars and crosswalks. A few minutes away, Sydenham Road and Highway 8 climb more than 100 metres up the escarpment.

Dundas roads worth practising
King Street West
The downtown main street, with parked cars, crosswalks and shops. A slow, busy street that rewards careful driving.
Sydenham Road
The climb from Memorial Square up to Rock Chapel Road and the Sydenham Lookout. It rises well over 100 metres, and parts of it are steep.
Highway 8 to Brock Road
Heading west out of town, Highway 8 climbs the escarpment too. A longer climb, good for holding a steady speed uphill.
Cootes Drive
The divided road between Dundas and McMaster, faster than the town streets. Good for merging and keeping pace.
Osler Drive
A multi-lane road past University Plaza, with plaza entrances and plenty of turning traffic.
Old Dundas Road
The back road up to Ancaster, closed to trucks and climbing more than 100 metres. Slow and steady wins here.
what people book
What Dundas is good for
Hill starts, hill parking and steady speed on a climb are all within a few minutes of each other in Dundas. That makes it useful for parking practice and for G2 test prep. Cootes Drive and the 403 are close by when you want faster roads.

good questions
Lessons in Dundas: questions
Do you give driving lessons in Dundas?
Yes. She drives to you anywhere in Dundas, and lessons can use the downtown streets, the escarpment roads and Cootes Drive.
How do I start on a steep hill without rolling back?
In an automatic, hold the brake, then move your foot to the gas and press smoothly as soon as you let go. Many newer cars have hill-start assist, which holds the brake for a second or two. Practising on a quiet hill makes it feel normal quickly.
What makes Dundas tricky for new drivers?
Mostly the hills. Sydenham Road and Highway 8 climb more than 100 metres out of town, and the downtown streets are busy with parked cars and people crossing. Both are worth practising with an instructor first.
