the west end
West Hamilton is the lower city between downtown and Highway 403: Kirkendall and Locke Street, Strathcona, Dundurn and Chedoke. Quiet 40 km/h side streets, busy one-way main roads and the 403 right next door.

West Hamilton roads to practise on
Locke Street South
The Kirkendall shopping street, with paid parallel parking along much of it, people stepping out between cars, and a 30 km/h school zone between Herkimer Street and Stanley Avenue. One of the best streets in the city for parking practice.
King Street West
One-way westbound, with a red bus-only lane from Queen Street to Dundurn Street. You can only enter it to turn right at Strathcona, Locke, Pearl or Ray, so choosing your lane early matters.
Main Street West
One-way eastbound, with traffic merging off the 403. East of Dundurn Street it’s due to become two-way, with construction scheduled from late fall 2026 to late fall 2027.
Aberdeen Avenue
A four-lane, 50 km/h street past Chedoke Golf Course, with a Community Safety Zone and ramps to the 403 at its west end.
Dundurn Street South
A 40 km/h street with painted bike lanes and a school-area Community Safety Zone. Check the bike lane before every right turn.
Herkimer Street and Charlton Avenue
A pair of one-way residential streets with bike lanes, and 30 km/h near the schools. Good practice for turning from one one-way street onto another.
Beckett Drive
Also called the Queen Street Access: a two-lane climb up the escarpment with no shoulder, no passing and a sharp curve near the top. It rises about 50 metres.
The King and Main interchange
Short ramps between Highway 403 and King and Main Streets, some with low advisory speeds. G1 drivers can only use the 403 itself with a licensed driving instructor.

What West Hamilton is good for
Locke Street is one of the best streets in the city for parallel parking practice, and the one-way main roads and the King Street bus lane make good G2 test prep. With the 403 next door, highway lessons can start close to home. Beckett Drive is covered in the Mountain accesses guide.

good questions
Lessons in West Hamilton: questions
Is Main Street still one-way through West Hamilton?
Yes. Main Street West runs one-way eastbound. The City plans to make Main Street two-way from Dundurn Street to the Delta, with construction scheduled from late fall 2026 to late fall 2027. The stretch west of Dundurn, toward the 403, isn’t part of that project.
Can I drive in the King Street West bus lane?
Only to turn right. The red bus-only lane runs on King Street West from Queen Street to Dundurn Street, and drivers may enter it only to turn right onto Strathcona Avenue, Locke Street, Pearl Street or Ray Street.
What are the speed limits on West Hamilton’s side streets?
Mostly 40 km/h, and 30 km/h in the school zones. Main roads such as Main Street, King Street and Aberdeen Avenue are 50.
Can I practise on Highway 403 with a G1 licence?
Only with a licensed driving instructor. G1 drivers can’t use 400-series highways posted over 80 km/h, and the 403 here is posted at 90.
