the whole city

From the one-way streets downtown to the wide roads on the Mountain, Hamilton gives you a bit of everything to learn on. The city’s DriveTest centre is here too, on Kenora Avenue.

why it’s good practice

A city that teaches you a lot

Hamilton packs a lot into one place: one-way streets, steep roads up the escarpment, a fast parkway across the Mountain, and the city’s own DriveTest centre in the east end.

where you’ll practise

Where Hamilton lessons can go

Downtown, the Mountain and the east end each teach something different.

  1. King and Main

Downtown’s one-way pair: King runs west, Main runs east, each several lanes wide with lights at almost every block. Good for choosing your lane early. The City plans to make Main Street two-way, with work expected to run into 2027.

  2. The Mountain accesses

The Jolley Cut, the Claremont Access, the Sherman and Kenilworth Accesses, James Mountain Road and Beckett Drive all climb the escarpment. Each one is a short lesson in hill driving.

  3. Upper James Street

The Mountain’s main north-south road: wide, busy and lined with plazas. Plenty of lane changes and left turns.

  4. The Linc

The Lincoln Alexander Parkway crosses the Mountain at 90 km/h, with interchanges at Upper James, Upper Wentworth, Garth and more. A step up from city streets.

  5. The east end

Barton Street, Kenilworth Avenue and Queenston Road, plus the big two-lane traffic circle where Queenston Road, Main Street East and Bell Avenue meet.

  6. Around Kenora Avenue

The DriveTest centre sits on Kenora Avenue near Barton Street and Centennial Parkway. Test prep can include driving around there, so the area feels familiar on the day.

what people book

Lessons that suit the city

If your road test is at Kenora Avenue, G2 test prep can include the streets around the centre. The Linc and the Red Hill lead naturally into highway lessons and G test prep. And if downtown traffic makes your palms sweat, lessons for nervous drivers can start somewhere quieter and build up.

good questions

Lessons in Hamilton: questions

Do you give driving lessons all over Hamilton?

Yes. Lessons cover the whole city: downtown and the lower city, the east end, West Hamilton and Westdale, and the Mountain. She drives to you, so the lesson starts wherever you are in the city.

Where is the road test in Hamilton?

At the Hamilton DriveTest centre, 370 Kenora Avenue North, in the east end. It offers both the G2 and the G road tests.

Are King Street and Main Street still one-way?

For now, yes. King runs west and Main runs east through downtown. The City is converting Main Street to two-way traffic, with the work planned to finish by the end of 2027, so expect lane closures along it in the meantime.
