by the village
Westdale is a quiet neighbourhood of curving 40 km/h streets around a small village main street. That makes it one of the best places in Hamilton for a first lesson.

Westdale streets to practise on
North Oval and South Oval
Two curving residential streets that loop through the neighbourhood. Smooth, steady steering at low speed, with T-intersections and parked cars.
Newton, Paisley, Cline and Marion
A 40 km/h grid with stop signs, uncontrolled intersections and cars parked on both sides. A good place for first lessons.
The school streets
Glen Road, Bond Street North, Arnold Street, Dalewood Avenue and part of Longwood Road are 30 km/h beside the schools. Practise holding a low speed and watching for crossing guards.
Westdale Village
King Street West between the shops: on-street parking, crosswalks, bike lanes and cars pulling out. The City posts it at 40 km/h, though some map apps still show 50.
Sterling Street and Longwood Road
Streets with painted bike lanes, and a hill on Longwood Road North. Check the bike lane before every right turn.
The 403 ramps
Ramps to Highway 403 at Main Street West and Aberdeen Avenue, posted at 90 km/h. Freeway practice is right next door, though G1 drivers can only use it with a licensed driving instructor.
Main Street West and Cootes Drive
The busy edges of the neighbourhood: six lanes of two-way traffic on Main Street West, and Cootes Drive, where the limit rises from 50 to 80 km/h.

good questions
Lessons in Westdale: questions
What is the speed limit on Westdale’s streets?
The City posts the residential streets at 40 km/h, including the Ovals and King Street West through Westdale Village. Some streets beside schools are 30 km/h.
Where can I practise parallel parking in Westdale?
On King Street West in Westdale Village, where there’s on-street parking among the shops. The quieter residential streets around the Ovals are easier for first attempts.
Can a G1 driver use Highway 403 from Westdale?
Only with a licensed driving instructor. Highway 403 is closed to G1 drivers wherever the limit is over 80 km/h, and at the Main Street West and Aberdeen Avenue interchanges it’s 90.
Is the LRT being built in Westdale?
Not yet. The LRT will run along Main Street West at the south edge of Westdale, not through the village. For now there’s only preparatory work, such as Metrolinx utility inspections along the route until the end of 2026.
