If everything goes smoothly, the government fees for an Ontario G licence add up to $251: the $159.75 G1 package plus the $91.25 G road test. Retests, late cancellations and insurance are where costs creep up, so here’s the full picture.
The short answer
| Item | Fee |
|---|---|
| G1 licence package: knowledge test, first G2 road test and a five-year licence | $159.75 |
| G road test | $91.25 |
| Total if you pass each test the first time | $251.00 |
Fees include taxes and are set by the province. They haven’t changed since July 12, 2019, and in 2026 the test fees were written into the Highway Traffic Act itself.
What the $159.75 G1 package covers
- $16 for the knowledge test
- $53.75 for your first G2 road test
- $90 for the five-year licence
You pay it all when you apply for your G1. The vision test is free. The G1 test guide explains what to bring.
What retests cost
| Test | Each extra attempt |
|---|---|
| Knowledge test | $16.00 |
| G2 road test | $53.75 |
| G road test | $91.25 |
You pay the full fee every time, and you have to wait at least 10 days between road tests. That’s the real cost of a failed test: the fee, plus time.
When you can lose a road test fee
- Cancel or reschedule with less than 48 hours’ notice, arrive late, or don’t show up: you lose the whole fee. DriveTest makes exceptions, with proof, for bad weather, a death or illness in your immediate family, jury duty, incarceration, or an unscheduled call in to work.
- Your car fails the examiner’s check (the test is declared “out of order”): you lose half the fee. The other half stays as a credit, and you pay the missing half to rebook.
- Prepaid fees stay valid for six years.
Tip
Don’t pay a booking fee
DriveTest doesn’t charge one. Third-party sites that offer to book or find test dates for a fee have nothing to do with DriveTest.

Licence fees after you pass
| Item | Fee |
|---|---|
| Licence renewal, five years | $90.00 |
| Replacement licence | $35.75 |
| 3-year driver record, uncertified | $12.00 |
| 3-year driver record, certified | $18.00 |
Driver education courses
A ministry-approved beginner driver education course is optional. It runs at least 40 hours, finished within a year: at least 20 hours in a classroom or online, at least 10 hours in the car with a licensed instructor, and 10 more flexible hours.
What it gets you: your minimum time on a G1 drops from 12 months to 8, so you can take the G2 road test sooner. Schools set their own prices. On insurance, ontario.ca says an insurer may give a discount but it isn’t guaranteed, while FSRA, Ontario’s insurance regulator, says most companies offer one for a recognized driver training course.
Private lessons
Private lessons don’t shorten your G1 wait, but they’re the most direct way to get ready for a road test. Prices vary from instructor to instructor. Mrs. Akbar doesn’t publish prices, because it depends on how many lessons you need; call or text 416-457-5778 for a price. A few of her reviewers mention that her rates are fair.
Insurance for new drivers
Insurance is the biggest ongoing cost for most new drivers, and it’s mandatory. Driving without it can mean a fine of $5,000 to $50,000, a licence suspension and an impounded car.
FSRA lists what shapes a premium: the car, your driving record (including collisions, tickets and years licensed), where you live, your age and other personal factors, how much you drive, and the coverage and deductible you choose. Its ways to save include:
- Shopping around
- A driver training discount
- The graduated licensing discount: 10% for a year when you move up to a G2, and again at G, with no chargeable convictions or at-fault collisions
- Being listed as an occasional driver on a parent’s policy
- Student discounts
- A winter tire discount, which every insurer must offer
- A higher deductible
The rule
New since July 1, 2026
Only medical, rehabilitation and attendant care benefits are still mandatory on Ontario auto policies. Other accident benefits, such as income replacement, became optional on new and renewed policies. If you’re buying your first policy, ask your insurer or broker what’s included.
This is general information, not insurance advice. Your insurer or broker can tell you what applies to you.
Ways to keep the total down
- Pass the first time. A retest costs $53.75 or $91.25 and at least 10 days.
- Check your car before a road test. A dead brake light or a temporary spare can cost you half the fee.
- Move or cancel tests at least 48 hours ahead.
- Keep your record clean. Tickets cost you twice: once in fines and again in insurance.
